What happens at a ChatterboxBabies Group?
A ChatterboxBabies session last for one hour. The first half of the group is the 'busy' part where we sing lots of songs, listen to music, use the instruments to make some of our own and of course learn some new actions and simple 'signs'. There may be toys or other props, sometimes puppets, a game or some bubbles!
After half an hour, we choose music to listen to and bring out some toys or sensory play items for the babies and drink and biscuits (and usually some cake) are provided for the adults. This is a chance for the babies to play and socialise and also a chance for the adults to chat and ask any questions they may have.
Towards the end of the session we sing the 'tidy-up' song and say goodbye to each other. A handout is provided which may have diagrams of that week's core signs, song words, or tips about promoting speech and language development. Over the weeks the handouts build up into a very useful resource.
The sessions are very relaxed and informal. If a baby needs changing or feeding, that is absolutley fine. We always repeat songs and signs on a regular basis as the babies (and the adults!) need this in order to learn, so missing a few minutes when a baby needs attending to is never a problem.
Each week the group will focus on a particular theme, from the essential routine such as 'bedtime' and 'mealtime', to fun and topical subjects such as 'a trip to the Zoo' and 'Christmas'. Over the weeks your signing skills will develop to cover all the vocabulary you need and if you need any more words you only have to ask. The most important and useful words and signs are repeated regularly, meaning that babies can join at any point in the term and quickly pick up the basics.
